First of all, a big thanks to [livejournal.com profile] alaana_fair and[livejournal.com profile] oldenuf2nb for the virtual gifts.  You guys are the best!

Has everyone seen the article about fan fiction in Time Magazine? http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,2081784-1,00.html  I thought it was a fair and balanced appraisal, unlike most such articles.

Real life has been keeping me pretty busy.  I try to get the kids out of the house at least every other day for some sort of activity.  We went hiking and boating at Diablo Lake, up in the Cascades, yesterday.  It's very pretty up there (picture under cut).

Summer has definitely had its ups and downs so far.  I had a white Christmas going on in my kitchen the other day, after my daughter requested pancakes and I reached up into the pantry shelf to get my industrial-sized bag of pancake mix and promptly dropped it.  The bag split open and we had powder everywhere.  Luckily, we got it cleaned up before DH came up and saw it.  One of us swearing was more than enough.

My Stargate fan club, http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Stargate-Fan-Club/ had an unusual Meetup last weekend.  We had an actor-guest, Tom O'Brien. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0639856/ He lives on Point Roberts, Washington (where David Hewlett used to live), and [livejournal.com profile] alsogater met him there, recognized him from roles in the X-Files and Stargate SG-1, and started talking to him and made friends with him.  She asked me several months ago if we could have a special meetup with him as a guest, but it never seemed to work out.  We finally got it scheduled and it turned out well, with about 20 of us in attendance.  He's an interesting guy.  He's well-known in the business and seems to have no problems with getting acting gigs, but has decided to take a couple of years off to focus on organic farming.  He was very friendly and personable and talked about his role on SG-1 and scenes with Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks and how it was a really good experience working on the show, since they gave him control of his scenes and let him film first, and then they reacted to him.

My pathological fear of crowds will probably prevent me from seeing DH2 on its opening weekend.  I'll probably wait until the next week.  My kids are too young for the intense theatre experience, so if I don't want to see it alone, I'll have to go up to Vancouver or down to Seattle.  I'm thinking about waiting until the 23rd, going to Seattle, grabbing [livejournal.com profile] mercury973 , going to see Outdoor Star Trek in the park http://pacific-slash.livejournal.com/, and then going to see DH2 at Cinerama.  Hmm... Let me start softening her up...
